About AI Background Blur

GoStudio.ai's background blur tool finds the subject in a photo, keeps it sharp, and softens everything behind it into a natural depth-of-field blur, like the bokeh from a wide-aperture lens or a phone's portrait mode. It works on photos already taken, with no special camera.

Blurring a background on GoStudio.ai is free: it uses no credits and adds no watermark to the download. The subject is separated in your browser, so it works on desktop, iPhone and Android with nothing to install. A strength slider sets how soft the background gets before you download.

AI background blur combines two steps: a segmentation model works out which pixels belong to the subject, and a blur is applied only to the rest. Because the edge comes from the model rather than a hand-drawn mask, hair and fine outlines stay sharp instead of picking up a glow.

When should you blur a background instead of removing it?

Blur when the setting still matters but should not compete with the subject: portraits, product shots in a real room, cars on a street, pets at home, outfits in a location shoot. Remove the background instead when the subject has to go onto a plain color, a template or another scene.

How do I get the most natural blur?

Three things make background blur look like it came from the camera:

  • Start with a sharp subject: The tool keeps the subject as it is, so a subject in focus gives the strongest contrast with the softened background.
  • Keep the blur moderate: A medium strength reads as a real lens; pushing the slider to the maximum can make the cutout look pasted on.
  • Upload the highest resolution available: More pixels give the model more detail to work with, so hair and fine edges stay clean against the blur.
